Summer Short Series 

No matter what factors are out in the world artists can always make, share, and connect using the digital space. The NBFF: Summer Short Series features dance shorts 3 minute or less on NB social media accounts for a limited time every summer to promote artmaking and artist connection via the digital space. This program is the free virtual counterpart to the kNOwBOX dance Film Festival.

SUBMISSION 

CATEGORIES

Films deliver a clear story/idea that maximizes imagination and creativity in 3:00 minutes or less. Films are made to view on devices. The kNOwBOX dance Short Series (NBSS) Selected short films will be screened on @knowboxdance social media accounts for a limited time in early August 2023 and on special devices as part of the NBFF 2023 Festival lineup.

The official kNOwBOX dance Film Festival Summer Short Series 2022 selection featured 4 dance films from China, Italy, and Spain. NBSS 2022 streamed 4 shorts on NB social media platforms from August 6-7, 2022. These dance shorts expressed how dance and film can take us around the world in just a few short moments.

Short Series 2021 Official Selection

The official kNOwBOX dance Film Festival Summer Short Series 2021 selection featured 7 dance films of both national and international filmmakers from Bulgaria, Germany, Italy, Korea, and the United States. NBSS 2021 streamed 7 shorts on NB social media platforms August 7-8, 2021. These dance shorts offered unique perspectives on how dance and film can be used as entertainment and escape.

Short Series 2020 Official Selection

The official kNOwBOX dance Film Festival Summer Short Series 2020 selection features 8 dance films of both national and international filmmakers from Iceland, Mexico, South Africa, and the United States. Films respond to the worldwide events of 2020 with the common theme of connection. NBSS 2020 streamed live on NB social media platformers offered unity and hope for viewers familiar and new to dance. All proceeds were donated to the Artist Relief Tree  to financially support artists who are affected by cancellations due to COVID-19.

Joy-Marie Thompson

New York, New York, USA

Joy-Marie Thompson is a performer and choreographer from Pittsburgh, PA. She
received her BFA in Dance Performance from the Conservatory of Dance at SUNY Purchase. There she met Sherah Shipman, where they created their
dance short film "TONGUE TIED SHREWS". Screened in 5 film festivals inationally and internationally, "TONGUE TIED SHREWS" was also featured in the Dance Film Association's "#mydancefilm" screening at Lincoln Center. Their next film, “LINKt”, a film about the relationship between Black and white women, will premiere in 2020. Thompson has professionally performed the choreography
of Sidra Bell, Staycee Pearl, Shamel Pitts and Maxine Doyle for Sleep No More (NYC). In 2016, Thompson co-created “Interpretations”, a photo exhibit in
collaboration with Rachel Neville, where she emulated photos of famous black dance artists. Thompson is also the founder of issadancelook, a blog that archives photos of dancers’ clothes inside and outside the studio.
